I'm not well versed in Catholicism, but if it's true that "the 80-year-old Pope - himself born in Germany - will argue that his countryman was not a heretic after all." wouldn't many see that as a problem against Papal Infalliabilty?
I think the question hinges upon whether the original statement was made "ex cathedra", and if the second one is too.
